If you run a small business in Kochi or anywhere in Kerala, GST registration is one of the first compliance steps you cannot skip. This guide breaks down who needs to register, what documents you need, and how the process works.
Who Needs GST Registration?
GST registration is mandatory if any of the following apply:
- Your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (goods) or ₹20 lakh (services) in most cases.
- You make inter-state sales of goods or services.
- You sell online through marketplaces such as Amazon or Flipkart.
- You want to claim input tax credit on your purchases.
Even below the threshold, voluntary registration makes your business look more credible to corporate clients.
Documents Required
- PAN card of the business or proprietor
- Aadhaar card
- Proof of business address (rent agreement or electricity bill)
- Bank details and a cancelled cheque
- Passport-size photograph
The Registration Process
The application is filed online on the GST portal. After submitting your details you receive an Application Reference Number (ARN). Once verified, your GSTIN is issued — usually within 7 working days.
